AUDIO MASSAGE FURNITURE also
on

At the university Paris 8 with Alexis Chazard and Michael Sellam, we had a
week of workshop
.
It was a week of experimentation with sound with an open sight on what is a remix.

I wanted to make a physical remix, make the public feel the sound physically, intensely. I started to dream about a furniture that will make me compose a very special type of music, physical music (inspired by the def rave community).

I wanted to intensify my music by a gestual performance (massage) direclty
on the body of the listener. Here is the path of my two hands on the body of
the audience : i would ask the audience, and one person, would come on stage
to experiement the music + stimulating furniture + massage ....
This schema also indicated :
- left line : variations of stage colour lighting, from blue _ green _ orange
_ red _ orange _ green _ blue _ (it's a cycle as you can see )
- right line ; partition for a musician also on stage improvising with prepared
5 instruments corresponding to body parts.

The entire performance is detailled in this partition :
- LINE 1 : music extracts (from which the remix was edited) in a graphic dynamic,
with approximative time-line in black squares at the bottom.
-LINE 2 : stimultaed parts of the body, detailled gesture of hands (pressure,
quickness, expression, directions ...)
-LINE 3 : expressive representation of the music, dynamic of the action
-LINE 4 : deformed body and precise hands and fingers paths
-LINE 5 : little bubbles are for keywords with precise sound - gestual moments

Close-up on the LINE 5 : during the performance I need to have at least LINE 4 and 5 as a reminder. The size of the deformed body gives me instantly very essential intuitive informations to apply the right duration to each body part. The Body also has different zones of awareness : I had to emphasize on the less sensible parts especially.

To help my self memorize I always draw the music, it also helps me adjust
the massage gestual.
The music I used in the remix is
from Bjork, Leos Janacek, Alvin Lucier, Uzlyau (oural gutural singing), Henk
Bagins, Ligeti, Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki, Otomo Yoshihide, Tatsuya Nakatani, Merzbow,
OOO, Ophidian, Xanopticon, Speedcore, Gelstat, Noisebuilder, Chris Clark, Bogdan
Raczynski, Osvaldo Golichov, Dick Raaijmakers, Lucienne Boyer, Camille de Saint
Saëns,
Egberto Gismonti, Nana Vasconcelos, Rabi Abou Khalil, Fairuz.

This is the necessary equipment to perform (from left to right)
1- a 12' inch Powerbook with Mac OS 10.3.9 and with Live©, and Max MSP©,
connected by firewire to :
2- an external Hard-drive containing all my music VST instruments and original
music files in the remix
3 - a midi piano OZONE by M-audio connected to the Mac by USB and to the sound
amplifier by XLR cables.
4 - A 2 x 400 Watt US Blaster© symetrical amplifer (no bridge necessary)
connected by one SPEAKON cable to
5 - mono 2 way filter (Sphynx audio system© , SFP-8-2406) for separating
the high and low tones
6 -
38 cm ø sub-woofer
7 - a dynamic motor and a cornet

The smallest but very important part is the filter : without the tweeter would be blown of instantly. This filter is fused (lamp) and was very effective, I was able to put a very strong input in the loud speakers.

What was left was only to rehearse : composing the music i was imagining my self being given a synchronised massage.
Coming soon : the video of the performance filmed by Michael Sellam and the Paris 8 students.
