perpetuate the violence

I never know where is honnesty, but I deeply respect commitment.

I am very impresed by the work of the Iraqi artist Wafaa Bilal.

There is no single-way to solve a problem or cure a disease and repairing a catastrophy can only happen the catastrophy has happenned…

Now I have 2 comments :

- on the video the artist does not have a stain of paint on himself, after 6000 bullets, this is either, very lucky, or the physical computing interface was very very inacurate… What does it mean?

- We know it, technology has always offered more distance and more efficiency in violence and unfair war between the have and have-not… This work does a powerful demonstration of the idea, so… how to stop the violence? talking about it / re-enacting it or simply not talking and try to forget it, or offer an alternative, or take direct action? I am dangerous (song). Or are we voluntarily perpetuating the violence?

Is technology made for destroying humans or life in general? Will there ever be a human technology? Will there ever be a real life technology?

Wafaa Bilal’s childhood in Iraq was defined by the horrific rule of Saddam Hussein, two wars, a bloody uprising, and time spent interned in chaotic refugee camps in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Bilal eventually made it to the U.S. to become a professor and a successful artist, but when his brother was killed at a U.S. checkpoint in 2005, he decided to use his art to confront those in the comfort zone with the realities of life in a conflict zone. Thus the creation and staging of “Domestic Tension,” an unsettling interactive performance piece: for one month, Bilal lived alone in a prison cell-sized room in the line of fire of a remote-controlled paintball gun and a camera that connected him to internet viewers around the world. Visitors to the gallery and a virtual audience that grew by the thousands could shoot at him 24 hours a day. The project received overwhelming worldwide attention, garnering the praise of the Chicago Tribune, which called it “one of the sharpest works of political art to be seen in a long time,” and Newsweek’s assessment “breathtaking.” It spawned provocative online debates and ultimately, Bilal was awarded the Chicago Tribune’s Artist of the Year Award.
Structured in two parallel narratives, the story of Bilal’s life journey and of his “Domestic Tension” experience, this first-person account is supplemented with comments on the history and current political situation in Iraq and the context of “Domestic Tension” within the art world, including interviews with art scholars such as Dean of the School of Art at Columbia University, Carol Becker, who also contributes the introduction. Shoot an Iraqi is equally pertinent reading for those who seek insight into the current conflict in Iraq, and for those fascinated by interactive art technologies and the ever-expanding world of online gaming.
Wafaa Bilal, a professor of Photography and Imaging at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, has exhibited his art worldwide and lectured extensively. He has been interviewed on NPR, the BBC, CNN, MSNBC and the History Channel. Visit his website, www.wafaabilal.com.

Ouro Bouros and Brain Disorders

Alvaro Cassinelli is making a great project called Ourobouros… You can participate to this project if you have a webcam and internet access, just contact him.

“Ouroboros” is a shared virtual space, a world-scale tunnel built by chaining video-conferencing cameras and projectors in a closed loop around the world. This virtual space comes into contact with the Earth at several entry points or “Gates” situated in different cities, each standing in a location particularly representative of the place (public squares, markets, private homes, etc). Each Gate is simply composed of a (portable?) projection screen, a video camera a little far away, and an “interstitial” public space in between. The camera captures the whole view – that is, the passersby and the standing projection screen blended in the background - and the resulting live stream is sent over the Internet to be projected onto a similar structure - in a different city, in a different country, in a different continent. The process repeats itself until the loop is completed, as the final video is projected back onto the first screen - only to restart a tour in an eternal circulation (Fig.1a). In its (almost) instantaneous travel around the world, the video stream will gather “souvenirs” of the visited places. People from all around the world will appear on the screen as standing in the middle of a tunnel whose walls are composed by an infinite recursion of (Matryoshka-like) nested video windows; one can recognize the actual location of the shooting in each of these rectangular frames.

It would produce an image such as this one :

and be displayed in public space:

I just think this is quite magical… AAAhhhh….

Interestingly enough, you can find some formal reference to this kind of space and time traveling in traditional japanese architecture when it comes about Torii :

And now, a surprise : when I first started blogging -not so long ago- the very first article I wanted to write about was the work of Bryan Fu on Brain disorders. I talk about it here, since Ouro Boros is what he did in this stunning video “Brain Disorder, Transient Global Amnesia” (a few years ago) while studying media arts in London, please click on the image below (links to the genius video) >>

Transient Global Amnesia

- A passing episode of short-term memory loss without other signs or symptoms of neurological impairment

- Disoriented to place and time

I shoot a series of still shots on different objects. The shots can be a movement, or just an object that can show the change of time. When the change is completed, the clip end.

With the special arrangement, every object seems changing in real time. The audience may realize that the object that has shown before is now showing again when the change is completed. The overall flow is like recalling the memory of the audience. Something started few minutes ago and is processing in every second, may now be forgotten.

And he did a couple of really amazing videos (click on them below), available here to watch, all exploring the visual reprezentation of supposed brain damage effects:

Full text documentation about each video here, by Bryan Fu.

Now you want to be brain damaged too!

Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. 2012 is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.

A film directed by Roland Emmerich, in theaters (USA): July 10, 2009. By then I must have the 2012hopes.com website a reliable and used ressource…

design for 2012

Do you remember the big 2001 bug, everything was supposed to fail, the technological world should have collapsed… And you’re reading this blog.

Fear must have been the most powerful influence on politics, economy, family, personal emancipation since… forever. Some might say we are driven by our desires, I think we can attribute an equal responsability to fear, may it be of the father, the police, the state, satan, eternal damnation… So this is an opportunity for incredible power, for the ones that would propose a swindler type placebo solution… Do we want to be one of those, exploiting peoples fears? Or shall we bring -almost realistic- design proposal, like bunkers (aren’t they -fallout shelters- perfect objects of mind control?). And what if it really happens?

PU200611 Fig1.png

I don’t know if you heard about it, but the world -as we know it- is said to go through an extraordinary change pretty soon. They are supposingly many scientific correlationsand prophecies : The mayan calendarending, the real peak oil (graph above with different theories) or its aftermath, the end of Kyoto protocol, 7 billion humans on earth, eventually World Wide 3 (George Bush proposing World Wide 3 video), globalpandemic, the opening of freedom tower (ground zero), pole shift, (geomagnetic reversal), galactic alignment, we have our doomsday clock telling us how many minutes we are to “midnight“.

Doomsday Clock graph

We have many ways to look at a plausible apocalypse (2012 doomsday video) more or less sound. So much mysteries, what do people expect from such an event? Freedom? Sudden death? A new Age? What can we sell them to celebrate (HAHAHAHAHAH!)? Make the end -new beginning- more comfortable? What is the relation of causality between our fear-desire (hypothesis of collective-conciousness) for the event and it’s actual happening?

Today, what we call doomsday device is this :

Many hypothetical doomsday devices are based on the fact that salted hydrogen bombs can create large amounts of nuclear fallout.

Not very nice, it is called a planet killer  (could be an asteroid)… We might not die of it directly but of itsfallout, very gradually. Shouldn’t there be many different protective doomsday devices? Friendly ones! Shall we get out of this dominator culture?

It doesn’t matter if it is true or false, but anxiety is there… What to do of this anxiety? If we (humans) survive, shall we design longer term? Something completely out of cultural references, and according tocosmic patterns? Can we offer this “out of time” mind control - kingdom? How to embody such idea? Here is a nice forum of this crazyness. Enjoy life… NOW !

Sad Hat | Happy Hat

sad hat happy hat

“sad hat l happy hat” is one of design interventions in the “benchspace walk workshop”, part of London architecture festival.

We like London, this city-world full of differences, ethnic variety, colors, textures, sounds; within a block distance the environment can change totally. We are perpetually commuting and when we think about architecture, we think of vertical constructions, enclosing horizontal space.

Sad Hat | Happy Hat from cesar harada on Vimeo.

Naturally we have a tendency to look up when we are happy and down when we are sad. We want to bring emphasis on the ground and the sky, amplifying one’s mood. The “sad hat | happy hat” can be worn in two different ways, happy (looking up) or sad (looking down). The reflective surface inside multiplies the perception of either the sky or the ground.

But what happens when you either look only up or down? You bump into stuff! Maybe you need someone to complement your perception: if you are sad you may need someone happy, if you are happy someone sad, to walk together safely.

The object can be experienced in 2 main ways, outside-in and inside-out. The outside-in aspects: the appearance of the hats indicates obviously what mood you are in. This experience critiques our excess of self-awareness in public, how much we care about how others are looking at us. The inside-out aspect provides a thrilling sensorial experience, something different and playful, we might not care how people will look at us, in our own visual and acoustic distorted world.

The “sad hat | happy hat” is a simple playful perception limb that directs and amplifies ones perception and mood, allowing to re-consider how one feels about the city while creating an extreme social relation between the mask user and the others, encouraging the necessary complementary pair relation

coupling a human and a station with air, urine and feces

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0621air-urine-feces.jpg

In order to make obvious the connections between the station and human we need to link them physically, the one we are interested the most are the air, urine (piss) and feces (shit) managment. I made some researches and found some good existing products for breathing system:

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0621baby-assisting-air.jpg

Even a baby can tolerate such an “invasive” apparel, the people in the station could as well, but reduces the mobility. Now about Urine:

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0621urinary-system.gif

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0621urine-catheter.gif

For the urine and feces I found this amazing ressource: Urine and Bowel Management for children with Spinal Cord Injury and Spina Bifida, Copyright © 1987 by David Werner for the Hesperian Foundation, “Disabled Village Children” project.

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0621truck-driver-urinal.jpg

Also truck drivers have some sort of solution to that problem, in a truck driver style, hahaha!

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0621condom-catheter-600.jpg

We learn how to use a catheter or how to make one ourself the DIY way. The urinary is not that difficult, but the system for feces as it is semi-solid is more challenging…

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0621bowel-managment-600.jpg

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0621bowel-system.jpg

I found this type of equipment searching for bowel managment. The process depends a lot on the quality of the human feces, according to the Bristol Chart below.

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0621Bristol_Stool_Chart.png

Woooo,,, this project, starts to scare me a little bit huhuhuhu!…… And how to find all this equipment in Madrid?..
And, don’t forget to drink a lot!

Not parasite, symbiotic

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618sense-modify2-600.jpg

So these are the relations we can easily sense and affect, the interactions. But as I explained my research to Angel Borrego Cubero, he explained me, I did not fully understand yet, or I presented the system too unfolded:

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618system-concatenado.jpg

The system are on inside the other, the universe contains the solar system, we are interested in the sun, the moon and the earth, a building, the Urban Space Station, the plants and the human inside. The relation first described as parasitic between the Urban Space Station is NOT, it is a symbiotic relation since both actors are interested in the relation.

The installation aim is to convey an image of equilibrium, not of a dramatic dependence, a sense of comfort and curiosity should arise over a first-sight mysterious shape.
http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618inside-out-the-green-house.jpg

To make the relations between the element obvious it could be as simple as wiring together the elements, isolating the relations from “noise”, enabling precise measures too. A visitor could be located in the structure (green figure), being wired he would benefit from a constantly renewed quality of living : breathing OUT his oxygen-poor air at the entrance of the station, breathing IN the enriched air at near the exit. Even the surveillance guard of the museum could reclaim the use of the USS to enhance his/her working conditions! hehehe!

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618health-monitoring.jpg

The interacting visitor could have a symbiotic relation to the station could also be located out of the station (red figure), but it would make a very different statement and would cause hygenic hazards with many visitors…

In my mind the symbiotic relation has to be extended  and made as obvious as possible, from the universe to the plant or human, not to remain a fancy greenhouse, let’s wire it up, so we can measure and make a study of the controlled environment, a true Space Station

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618Universum.jpg
Aristotelian conception of the universe that preceded the models of Copernicus and Thomas Digges.

The USS is a symbolic representation of our universe, yet If a human was to act as a part of the organism, he shouldn’t be associated with the biblical figure of Adam (without Eve unfortunately!) but as a “neutral” living organism within a bigger organism.

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618in-or-out.jpg

Also the objects that we use to wire up the different actors can look really good and make the whole concept very self-explanatory.

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618intravenous-feed.jpg

good night day 2!

model of reality is reality

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618mockup.jpg

As far as I understood, we are not going to show the whole thing, but more a model of the system, just a model to explain the system. There will not be 2 structures, but one communicating with the outside; the air system of the pillows and the air system of the greenhouse rotation are distinct. So my task isn’t clearly defined : functional engineering or just prop’ / system explaination with nice graphics? Well, it is up to me, if I come up with a great system that is simple to implement, than we can do it, else, we’ll just carry on and try to build this as well as possible.

Ok, I need to make it simple, show the circuit that holds all the variables :

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618system-draft.jpg

Ok, if this is to be re-used, I need to make it look good, and more clear:

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618urban-space-station-diagram-small.jpg

Ok, great, now everything is as clear as a subway system map. We can sense and control each “line” running between the World - the Urban Space Station - Human, it quantity, quality, even nature, the following post will contain proposals of apparatus, BUT …

THE ARCHITECTURE IS JUST MAKING LIFE FUNCTION OBVIOUS (protecting, extending the human Body limits, embodying functions in technical objects, isolating and specialising objects)…
- HOW OBVIOUS DO WE WANT TO GET?
- HOW MUCH DO WE WANT TO MANIPULATE AND CONTROL (when change and difficulty is engine of progress and evolution, where is optimization? That’s an ethical and/or political statement, and as it it not my work, what should be my influence
- HOW FAR CAN BE THE ARCHITECTURE (in its obviousness) BE CHANGED FROM THE ORIGINAL PROJECT (optimized, functions made obvious) EXTENSION OF THE ARCHITECTURE DOMAIN? LET’S MAKE MORE THAN A GREEN HOUSE -> TOWARD MEDICAL AND AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY?.

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618how-far-shall-we-go.jpg

http://cesarharada.com/pearls/mypearls/2008/0618making-things-obvious_optimize.jpg

We are eternally computing with the universe so … OK, let’s make a list of tecnical artefact proposals that could optimize the system functions, may it be ironical…

L’art de conjuguer

art de conjuguer
craindre - - - vaincre

My mama is amazing. She just sent me this : “l’art de conjuguer, Bescherelle” a traditional french grammar book. By some sort of miracle the verb “craindre” (fear) and “vaincre” (overcome) are immediate consecutive… Let’s do it.
