If you are reading this blog post you are probably looking for an academic CV template.
To give you some context I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong applying for a higher position. I am ethnically French-Japanese, educated in the UK, with working experience in the USA and many other countries, with global academic ambitions. I am not only an academic, I have several preceding and parallel careers at the same time: entrepreneur, designer, artist, environmentalist, public speaker... I want a CV in which I can easily turn parts of my career “on” or “off” depending of who I am talking to without being obvious, but I don’t want to have to maintain multiple CVs…
I recently had to transition from having a “normal” 2 pages CV, to having an “academic CV” with more than 20 pages - and it is painful. When I asked my seniors, they shared their CVs and I was shocked by the number of details they disclosed, the amount of categories. It also made me realize that I might have been under-valued because my CV was not clearly formatted in an academic fashion.
Being a data nerd, not only do I want to make a CV that will give me professional opportunities, but I want to make a TOOL that is going to help me to reflect on the past -both qualitatively and quantitatively- so I can make better decisions for my future.
I want my CV to
- Satisfy and exceed standards from the “west” (North American, European, Oceania), “east” (Asia), and “global south” (Africa, Latin America, Middle East). → Table of contents
- Attractive, clean, precise. → Look & Feel
- Allows for emphasis on key achievements, and filter whole sections of my career if required. Say, if I want an academic role, show only academic stuff and hide the rest.
- Easy to maintain over time → with enough categories to make it easy to read, but not so many subcategories it would become heavy
- “Computational”. Not a Word document, but rather a spreadsheet that I can easily tally my grants budgets, filter by date, location, number of students mentored, contact hours with the number of students, link to source materials, contracts, etc.
I’m not saying this is what your CV should look like, I’m trying to build something that’s going to work for me, and I hope it can be useful for you, and I expect you will make changes to suit your situation and ambitions.
Standards for Academic CVs
I am randomly choosing academics (Full professors) from different countries and disciplines and “distill” my “cocktail” below. My sample size is tiny and definitely biased, I know.
