The eye-catching oversized CityShuttle cargo bike, which is built solely to cater for businesses handling logistics challenges, is now ready for lease.

When we haveĀ mentioned the CityShuttle in the pastĀ it has been a head-turner, most notably because of its sheer capacity and load carrying ability, but also because it has some rather unique features such as digital displays built in that can double up as functional screens or advertising boards.

No wider than 90cm, the astonishing cargo bike can fit on most cycle lanes, though it may have trouble where barriers become prohibitive on some networks as often they do. However, itā€™s also totally legal to use on roads and given its width will be faster and more agile through traffic than vans. Being classified as an e-bike (and therefore a bike) itā€™s better able to park up with little restriction to make quick deliveries.

It is, in essence one of the vehicles that businesses are increasingly looking to to beat a number of headwinds, namely the expansion of low emissions zones in cities and the associated fees, as well as being able to lower fuel and general vehicle running costs. The eagle-eyes will have noticed that some of the largest parcel delivery firms in the world have ordered fleets of such bikes having run the numbers and found cargo bikesĀ cheaper and more efficientĀ in cities than traditional vehicles.

CityShuttle: A cargo bike built for businesses

Modern challenges require modern solutions and so CityShuttle gave us an update on what it has achieved.

Tee Tyrell Blackwood at CityShuttle told us ā€˜As businesses look for new ways to increase efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint, we have completed ePack4 and begun trials in London whilst receiving interest from companies all over the world who are looking for logistics solutions for their last-mile delivery.

ā€˜Our mission is to provide efficient and sustainable, electric mobility options that not only enhance the efficiency of businesses but also contribute to reducing their carbon footprint.ā€™

The highlights of this vehicle, according to Tee, are:

  • At just 900mm wide, the ePack can use cycle lanes and roads alike ā€“ faster journeys, faster drop-offs
  • 5 metres length, 196cm high
  • 400 litre carry capacity
  • A 250W motor that has 5 power settings, plus a top 15.5 mph speed
  • Digital advertising screens for additional revenue to the operator
  • Automotive lights ā€“ Increased visibility compared to other cargo bikes
  • AI cameras covering blind spots and white noise signal for pedestrians to hear

This kind of cargo bike may well be the kind of vehicle, according to industry speculators, that has triggered a somewhatĀ unexpected government consultationĀ on upping the wattage output of motors, though there is of course no indication or suggestion of the companies that have actively called for that as yet.

An enhanced power output from the motor would not provide any more speed, but it would help acceleration, which for a heavyweight cargo bike essentially means youā€™d feel the support catch the extra weight. Larger batteries will be required to absorb that extra kickā€™s demands, but on a large business ready cargo bike thatā€™s little issue as thereā€™s plenty of places to stash an extra few cells.
