Summary

The Rotterdam-Rijnmond region faces air quality challenges due to high NOx and PM10 levels. The Port of Rotterdam Authority explored shore-side electricity at the Euromax terminal for pollution reduction. However, technical challenges like voltage and frequency differences and space limitations complicate implementation. Four scenarios were considered, but the high costs and potential impact on local air quality question the investment's value. It's suggested that other vessel types and terminals closer to urban areas might benefit more from shore-side electricity. Continuous monitoring is recommended before implementing this system at Maasvlakte II container terminals.
