  • Gabriella LEVINE (USA) : Hardware Designer & Hacker, Top women in Tech (Adafruit), Master de ITP Tisch de New York.
  • El Wali El Alaoui (Maroc): Fondateur de SaharaLabs / Tarfaya Hackerspace, premier hackerspace au Maroc.(USA): Creative Director, Microsoft Studios, Part of the XBox Kinect creation team; responsible for Kinect creation from inception to launch

English

Come for a 1-day intense, collaborative, hands-on workshop we will build remote-controlled sailing robots based on arduino microcontroller, raspberry π, servo-motors, DC geared motors, write code & software hacking, including with Kinect. We will build boat hulls, mast, rudders, sew sails, assemble electronics, build circuits, test-sail our boats the water, and document it online. While doing so, we will also discuss some of the concepts of DIY & open hardware movement.

The context of this workshop will be based around Protei, an Open Hardware Shape Shifting Sailing Robot to explore and clean the oceans. In order to address the scale and complexity of the issues in the ocean - Oil Spills, Plastic pollution, radioactivity, overfishing, Coral reef mapping, red tides and climate change- we must develop scalable, hence, Open technologies.

The hands-on workshop open to experts and beginners will be facilitated by :

  • Cesar HARADA (France-Japan): Inventor of the Protei Shape-shifting system, Ex MIT Project leader, TED Fellow.
  • Gabriella Levine (USA) : Hardware Designer & Hacker, Top women in Tech (Adafruit), Master from ITP Tisch New York
  • El Wali El Alaoui (Morocco): Founder of SaharaLabs / Tarfaya Hackerspace, first hackerspace in Morocco.
  • Darren Bennett (USA): Creative Director, Microsoft Studios, Part of the XBox Kinect creation team; responsible for Kinect creation from inception to launch

  2. MATERIALS AND TOOLS : Add what you bring here : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuuziAKG2PX9dFVOSjJnZ2NfR1FEdUJmYWRSblZvSlE&usp=sharing

Minimum bill of materials =

  • Two water bottles
  • Two simple dc motors
  • Two propellers
  • tape
  • Plastic Box
  • Motoruino (or any other microcontroller and a h-bridge)
  • Battery
  • various sensors optional (photocell, ultrasonic range finder...)

But we probably want more electronics & fabrication items if it will be for a more sophisticated / robotic-center group

  1. MONEY : 150 DH

@Gabriella : Materials: How can we expect to get parts like batteries, motors, etc? Is there a hobby shop, or a place to quickly order parts, or what other parts do you have?

@Gabriella : Budget: what is the budget for materials

Can we Call it “Social Robot-a-thon” or something original ?

  • how about “DIY floatable robotics”

“hacking electronic toys?

@Adnane Says: Can you send me  a “paragraph” in french I can share it with my contacts.

I will get you a venue ( a school) and get registration for the event .

I would suggest Rabat because we can have more schools but I will let you know by tomorrow.

What do you think?
