The explosion that shook the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig on April 20, 2010, marked the beginning of the largest oil spill in history. The waters of the Gulf of Mexico were covered in enormous amounts of the polluting black liquid despite countless attempts to stem the leak. According to the government website dedicated to the issue, the amount of the leak is about 4.9 million barrels, which is close to 800 million liters of oil that covered the bay.

The war on oil spills and cleanup is a complicated matter, which also involves quite a few health risks for those involved. Protei is an innovative project, trying to improve the situation in the spirit of open source that is well known from the world of software. Although the project is in the development stages, the goal has already been set: to send a swarm of small robotic boats that can collect the oil floating on the surface of the sea, thus protecting the lives of the people who do so today.

Cesar Minoru Harada, the coordinator and leader of the project, says in an interview with him, which lasts deep into the night of New Orleans that he arrived in the wake of the Defwater disaster, what exactly is trying to solve Protea. Harada, the son of a Japanese sculptor who came to Paris and a mother from Bion on the Spanish border, came to New Orleans on a winding path that included, among other things, studying design in the UK, working at MIT and now Protea.

"The life expectancy of everyone who worked in the cleaning of the Exxon Valdez disaster (the tanker that sank in Alaska) has plummeted for more than 20 years," says Harada. "The reason is that the oil itself is very toxic. What is even more toxic are the detergents used to clean the oil (Dispersants). These are substances that are also considered very carcinogenic."

Why use materials that are worse than the oil itself?

"In my opinion, because it is very bad for public relations if the oil reaches the shore, so try to get it down quickly from the sea. The problem is that these substances form a kind of bubbles of oil that slowly sinks in the sea until it reaches the bottom, where no one can collect it. It also kills fish and coral. "

The Rada notes that the current collection method is cheaper than other methods and that the companies that manufacture the detergents are affiliated with the oil companies. At the Defwater event, for example, Corexit was used, of which almost seven million liters were used in the Gulf clean-up operation, according to the government website that reports the case. The material is manufactured by Nalco Holding Company, a company that has business relationships with oil companies such as BP.

Harada explains that Protea is definitely not the first line of defense. In fact, like the Corexit, it went into action after many other methods failed, ranging from trying to pump oil directly from the leak to trying to stop the leak using a huge structure placed on the drilling site, like the one used in the Gulf of Mexico - a solution called "Top Kill". Then, one can try to prevent the spread of the leak using large floats that close the oil. Protey is supposed to start working in case all the previous options fail.

In collaboration with the fishermen

Today the collection of oil is done by manned ships, and as mentioned, it is a dangerous and complicated craft. Protea's solution combines quite unique software and hardware. Harada and its development partners hope that the design of their device, which includes front-wheel drive and a flexible bow that moves left and right, will allow them to cope better, and more safely, with the challenge. "Oil stains move in the wind direction, but thanks to the design, the prot茅g茅 can sail against the wind direction in a trajectory that will allow efficient collection of the oil," Harada explains.

The inflatable boat, which is expected to be eight meters long, is supposed to carry behind it a kind of long sack for collecting the oil. The Rada hopes that in the event of a storm, the boat will act as a kind of Nahum will rise, and even if it capsizes, it will be able to capsize back and continue the work.
