DakDam Labs, Cambodia

Agriculture makes up 70% of Cambodia’s labour force. However, competition is increasing as neighbouring countries use more advanced farming techniques and many Cambodian farmers find it difficult to make enough money for their families. Agriculture in Cambodia needs innovating.

“DakDam” means “To plant a seed” in Khmer (Cambodian Language). DakDam Labs (first edition 2018) was a unique, 3-months program for aspiring inventor-entrepreneurs for rural innovation in Cambodia. We co-designed the program and provided everything for aspiring ‘impact inventors’. By the end of the program, participants built an innovative product/service for the agriculture sector that a few of them turned into viable businesses. The program included workshops, field trips, peer-to-peer coaching and a demo day. DakDam Labs provided all facilities, tools, materials and mentors.

DakDam Labs was organised by Synergy Social Ventures (Abbie Jung-Harada & Jana Svedova), funded by the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs, supported by ImpactHUB Phnom Penh, MakerBay (Cesar Jung-Harada), Project Alba, 2i. I spent a week in Cambodia working with students, farmers, engineers, factory workers, and business mentors to support young Cambodian entrepreneurs. I loved it.
