  • Date: Nov 23, 2021: 09:30AM Keynote Speech 1
  • Location: Hong Kong Science Museum
  • Title: Open Science and Impact Innovation to Explore and Protect the Ocean
  • What I will be talking about: Global Warming is undoubtedly the greatest challenge of our generation. With it, will come large scale weather changes, biodiversity loss, agriculture disruption, public health crisis and the disappearance of entire countries and coastline communities due to sea-level rise. In this context, it is easy to lose hope and feel powerless, when each of us contributes to the problems. In this presentation, Cesar Jung-Harada will share how working with Open Science, Open Hardware and engaging with community building and education offers one path to accelerate positive changes, and accounting for individual contributions. Cesar will focus on maritime innovation and its potential in Hong Kong to make a meaningful contribution.

The Hong Kong Science Museum

The Hong Kong Science Museum was formally opened to the public in April 1991, and this year marks its 30th Anniversary. The Museum has been taking up a significant role in promoting science popularisation in Hong Kong through a wide variety of education and extension activities, with the Hong Kong SciFest being a highly successful large-scale community event which provides an array of fun-filled activities such as carnivals, field visits, workshops, talks and competitions targeting at young people and families with the collaboration of different science partners. In the recent years, the Museum has placed an importance in promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and cultivating the science culture in Hong Kong. With the aim of extending a wider audience base, new initiatives including outreach programmes and community projects have also been organised.

The Museum houses over 500 exhibits distributed throughout a number of exhibition halls to arouse public’s interest in the learning of science through hands-on experience. To maintain the Museum’s competitiveness in the 21st century, an expansion project is underway to rejuvenate the Museum complex. With the construction of new exhibition spaces and facilities, the Museum will be able to grow into a full-fledged world-class museum in the near future.
